About Level Up Subs

Level Up Subs currently is a One-Person-Subbing-"Group", dedicated to subbing shows noone else does.
The name "Level Up Subs" is a homage to Level 5, the authors of my first subbed series, Youkai Watch.

After Naisho dropped Youkai Watch I decided to sub it myself, since I definitely wanted to watch it together with my husband.

My knowledge of Japanese is not that big, but I'll give my best to give everyone the possibility to enjoy shows, noone else subs.

I'll release as fast as my time permits it!

I can only seed from about 8:00 - 23:00 German time, so please excuse if the torrents aren't loading out of that time frame.

  1. Ah sorry for the last comment, I had to confirm something first, haha. Alright so I translated the 4,5 and sixth episode fully, and I'm half trough 7, though none of them was put on video yet. So I wanted to ask you if you wanted to use them as a base for the next few episodes, so it's easier/faster. Though they may still have errors, I had someone else looking over them. You can contact me through youkaiwatchi.tumblr.com.
And lastly I wanted to offer you my help to translate them, if you want. I might not be actually that much of a help, because I'm not that good at Japanese, haha. ((And I'm pretty lazy actually))

  2. Hi, I'm Jack Zimmerman, and I would like to help you out on the subbing for Youkai Watch! I can pick out cool fonts for the characters, Exaggerate what they are saying, and putting in the translations of the Japanese text. This is my first request, so I you accept, you can teach me how to sub an anime, and how to make it authentic, and fun!

    1. I'm sorry, but I really don't have the time to teach someone how to sub.
Also, you don't just pick "cool" fonts for each character, it has to be easy to read and consistent.
And you shouldn't exxagerate, what they are saying...

  3. Yay! Thank you for picking this up :D I'd like to help if I can. My Japanese isn't good (I barely know any), but I might be able to help you time and/or typeset the subs. I actually don't have much experience with anime subbing, but I'd still like to help somehow. :)

  4. I'd like to help you out with parts where you have trouble with. I was helping out Quyen with checking until a while ago. This includes previews. I know someone else is doing them, but they are alright with me helping out. I've sent a message on Tumblr some time ago about it.

  5. Love this show! Grateful that you decided to sub it when no one else does. Don't wan't to nitpick but I would like to comment on the timing of the subs which are off a lot of times. The color for the subs is also either too dark or too radiant which I find distracting. White subs are the best in my opinion or subtle like the one the group subbing pokemon uses. Keep up the good work, I'll be watching :) Peace

    1. On my end everything looked good and my husband had no problems too.
I'll watch out for the timing some more and considering the color of the subs, maybe your screen settings are too dark?
I take care to choose well readable colors, and I don't want to omit them, because this way it's easier to see, who is saying what and I really like it that way

  6. I am grateful that you are doing something like this, because I know that it can take up to a year for a TV series or movie to get subbed. One anime that hasn't been fully subbed, is Stitch, Yes it is an anime, it is set on a Japanese Island, with most of the characters from Lilo and Stitch.

So if it is possible can you subtitle that show as well, take your time, as it finished airing on Mar 25, 2009

There is also Stitch! Special, (aired Jun 26, 2009), Stitch!: Itazura Alien no Daibouken ((aka Stitch 2) aired Oct 13, 2009 to Jun 29, 2010), and Stitch!: Zutto Saikou no Tomodachi ((aka Stitch 3) aired Jul 6, 2010 to Mar 8, 2011) .

    Thanks

    1. I'll look for raws and Co, but I can't promise anything so far.
At the moment I don't really have the time for an additional series, but maybe when I'm faster with subbing ^^

    2. That is ok, I have waited since 2009 for someone to subbed. I only got the first 3 episodes of Stitch, but they are RMVB files, the quality is so-so.

So take your time and maybe in a year or so, the series will be subbed.

      Thanks.

  14. I think that if you upload a magnet link in addition to a download to the torrent file you won't have to worry about Nyaa servers being down, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

    1. As far as I know there has to be a working tracker in the list, nyaa is usually providing that and I think it doesn't work if nyaa is down, otherwise I could just upload the torrent file on Google+ or MediaFire for you to download.

  19. Hello,

First of all I would like to say thank you! It's still fairly uncommon to see any one single person committed to single-handedly pick up a series and translate it for their sake and anyone else that might be interested in it, so I can't express enough appreciation to people like you who undertake the effort.

Second, I did notice that the reason of why you decided to pick up the series was because that one other group working on it decided to drop it after two episodes. I know those episodes are done and all, though just wondered if you were going at any point make your own version of them for the sake of making something uniform for the all series?

Do hope you're faring well, that you are enjoying this experience, and that things go good for you.

yes, I plan dping them myself too, as soon as I have the time for it(part of the first episode is done already since I used that one to "test-sub" to see if I would be able to)

  20. Is it possible if you could sub an anime series called Ojarumaru (おじゃる丸)? I'm a really, really big fan of that show and no one has ever bothered fansubbing it! I have some raws for the show, so if you're interested I can send them over to you via email. Please let me know if whether or not my request could be possible!

  21. Hello!

First of all, thank for you effort subbing this series! I really love it, as any Level-5 anime, and I can't really understand why big fansub teams ignored it when it started... :(

Recently, Level-5 stated that this series will be dubbed for European and American release... Will you still be subbing the Japanese version? I am afraid that the European version will come with changed names, like Inazuma Eleven, and, more importantly, that all the explanations about Youkai will be modified to adapt it to a Western audience... This means losing a lot of the cultural references this anime offers, which is one of the aspects that makes it so special and intriguing.

So, even if the European version starts and even if it will one day surpass your subbed release, I really hope you keep working on it, taking all the time you need. I believe it means a lot also for other fans.

Again, thank you for your hard work.

    Mari

  22. As a former one-person-subbing group subber, I wanted to thank you for all the work you've done on this series and I also wanted to say that you're doing a mighty good job!

I totally know what's it's like to do everything on your own (acquiring raws, typesetting, timing, translating, QC, encoding, maaan that takes me back!) but it's so satisfying when you finally release another episode :). I wish I could go back to those days, but alas my Japanese studies ironically take up too much time to dedicate myself to such large projects again. But if you ever need some help, I would be glad to help out :). I got the experience already, haha.

Anyway keep up the good work!

  24. Hi,

I noticed in your blog at one point you wrote that you are working from Japanese scripts. I was just wondering where I might be able to get the Japanese scripts from (especially for the first few episodes)? They would be a big help for me because I am studying Japanese. Thanks!

    1. I download the raws on nyaa.se from kingtqi-Raws, they have the script included.
someone also gave me the link to kitsunekko (http://kitsunekko.net/dirlist.php?dir=subtitles%2Fjapanese%2FYoukai_Watch%2F) when kingtqi had no jap script included once^^
